Beschreibung

While game theory and decision theory are typically concerned with the rationality of individual behavior, this course will focus on collective behavior and discuss different notions of collective rationality.

Since there is no consensus on what it is for a group to be rational, we will adopt an interdisciplinary perspective and discuss specific rationality conditions proposed by different fields. In particular, we will address the following questions:

- What is considered rational in collective decision making, according to social choice theory?

- What is considered rational in collective opinion formation, according to judgment aggregation theory and deliberation models?

- How do collective effects affect individual behavior, according to social epistemology, social psychology, and social networks theory?

- How does rational individual behavior (or opinion) relate to optimal collective behavior, according to those different approaches?
